Yahoo and Microsoft are Talking?!

Yahoo’s Carol Bartz and Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer are talking about search and advertising partnerships. Kara Swisher reports in All Things Digital that varoius sources inform the two are talking the kinds of commercial relationships they could have . Several scenarios are being discussed, one being where the companies could swap online advertising assets and deliver services to each other.

In appears that they are working towrds leveraging their competencies, which will benefit both tremendously and allow them optimize their resource allocation and use. This could benefit yahoo as it has been reported in the WSJ that it has lost the deal with Acer and Hewlett-Packard for tool bar distribution. This could cost yahoo 15% of its search traffic in the year and half.

If talks come through it is good news for the stockholders also. Since the companies are not working at against each other but togather, they can increase thier revenues and stock value.

Google buying Twitter for > 1b…. Is it true?

Everyone is talking, bloging and even tweeting that Google is buying Twitter. TechRepublic’s Michael Arrington informs that some sources say that Google and Twitter are either in the final or beginning stages of the process.

Well…. whatever stage they are in….. it is another story of the big guy buying out the small guy. It is interesting that I have been hearing more of twitter these days, than I have since its inception… Could this be coincidental… I do not think so, for one thing, I don’t believe in co-incidences.

Paying $1b for twitter … hmmm… What would folks at twitter do with that kind of $$?

Cell phone usage India – A different market

During my travel in India in Oct – Nov 08, I observed different types of cell phone users. The maid at home had a basic cell phone; even the rickshawala (person who peddles a rickshaw), auto, taxi folks has basic phones. However, my friends and a lot of other youngsters had phones that were more advanced – the ones that could hold songs, video clips, SMS, etc.

While house maids, people in semi-urban and rural areas use it more for communicating with one another; youngsters and college students used it for communication and entertainment. I noticed that a few in the semi-urban and rural areas were using their phones for entertainment.

There could be several reasons, three of which I believe are a direct result -

Affordable- The low cost of these phones allow a common man to use it as an effective tool for communication.
Literacy- There is a large pool that cannot read or write, but can speak well a couple of languages. This impedes them in storing the phones #s as well as sending text messages.
Broadband- It is not available in rural areas. Even in urban areas, it is not cost effective.

This results in different tiers in the cell phone industry, providing companies to market their products to a varied customer base based on usage.

Socialize…. But do not get addicted!?
